Digitization Projects in Progress

Artificial Limbs

The foundation of modern prosthetics can be directly traced to the coordinated efforts of the National Academy of Sciences under the various artificial limbs committees after the Second World War. America, at its height of post war efficiency and engineering acumen, set about to solve the burgeoning problem of amputees swelling an infrastructure of prosthetic delivery that was outmoded, outdated and unprepared. Artificial Limbs: A Review of Current Developments was an industry update of these research efforts and was published thirty-three times, spanning the years 1954 to 1972. This classic periodical was digitized by the DRFOP throughout 2007, with funding provided by various individuals and organizations. Individual donors are noted on each online issue.

Atlas of Limb Prosthetics, 2nd Edition

In June 2006, the DRFOP was granted permission to digitize the 2nd Edition of the Atlas of Limb Prosthetics: Surgical, Prosthetic and Rehabilitation Principles. The DRFOP gratefully acknowledges the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) for granting permission to digitize this important work, which was the authoritative textbook in the prosthetics field until the very recent publication of the 3rd Edition.

In August 2006, the project was funded by the Northern Plains Chapter of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists. Using those funds, the digitization process was completed very quickly, and a preliminary version that includes the full text of the Atlas was launched in late September 2006. Full-text searching capabilities were added several months later.

ACPOC Journals & Newsletters

This project was initiated by oandp.com in 2000, with the launch of ten years of digitized ACPOC Journals. The DRFOP is continuing the project, and in May 2006, launched an additional six years of journals. Work will continue on this project until all ACPOC Journals and newsletters (spanning at least 45 years) have been digitized and posted. The journals and newsletters are housed at the ACPOC website, but are also searchable from oandp.com and the DRFOP website.

Journal of Prosthetics & Orthotics (JPO)

The original JPO Online Library was launched in 1998 through the collaboration of The Academy and oandp.com. The library has continued to expand with the addition of new issues of the JPO as they are published. Newest issues are reserved for Academy members only for two years, and are then made available to the general public. The JPOs are housed at the Academy website, but are also searchable from oandp.com and the DRFOP website.

Future Projects

The DRFOP is aggressively working to obtain permission and funding to digitize many other important resources. Please contact us if you have a particular resource in mind that you would like to see digitized, or you would like to help with obtaining copyrights or funding the digitization process.
